“Winter Sleep” is the story of Aydın (Bilginer), a former actor who now runs a mountaintop hotel, and is dealing with his failing marriage. He sees himself as the region’s kind ruler, intervening in the business of the townspeople below the mountain. In reality, almost everyone, including his wife, dislike Aydın. He has a pompous column in the local newspaper and is writing a book on Turkish history. Conversations dominate the film, as the inner workings of the characters are slowly revealed.
The film drew over 237,000 viewers in the first month of its release, becoming Ceylan’s most-watched film, according to the Turkish Box Office.

Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Palme d'Or prize-winning drama “Kış Uykusu” (Winter Sleep) has been selected to represent Turkey in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the upcoming Academy Awards, according to a Twitter post by Culture and Tourism Minister Ömer Çelik on Monday. "Winter Sleep" is the third film by Ceylan to be selected by Turkey for the foreign Oscar race. His 2011 film “Bir Zamanlar Anadolu'da” (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia) was Turkey's candidate for the 84th Oscars while in 2009 his “Üç Maymun” (Three Monkeys) managed to make it to the nine-film shortlist at the 81st Academy Awards.
“Winter Sleep” is the seventh feature by Ceylan, a regular at the Cannes festival, where six of his films, including his 1995 short film “Koza” (Cocoon), had their world premieres.
“Winter Sleep” beat out 17 other titles in the official selection at this year's Cannes, which also included the newest efforts of such high-profile directors as France's Jean-Luc Godard, Britain's Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, Canada's David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan and Belgium's Dardenne brothers. It is the second Turkish film deemed worthy of the Palme d'Or, the first being “Yol” (The Road), by Yılmaz Güney and Şerif Gören, which won the prestigious prize in 1982.
The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Jan. 15, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 22 in Hollywood's Dolby Theatre.
