What is facing history? What does it mean? Prof. Turkkaya Ataov explains:
- To come to terms with history, only Turkey or any state alone can ot be chosen as a 'scapegoat'. If you need to confront the past and history, this should be applicable to all countries. If without fail all two hundred states will face their own history, we do the same. All nations should go through the same process. Then, the first state to fail and run will be our accusers. Further, none of them will attempt such a confrontation.
- Facing Past history is a problem. The archive documents forwarded to illuminate events must be comprehensive, complete, accurate, impartial and must be presented in a balanced manner. It is engaged in the task of science.
- The aim of confronting the past is not about creating a one-sided condemnation.
- Investigation of the topic, can not be a base of hatred and revenge for one of the parties to the dispute.
- Crime and punishment only applies to persons who committed the crime.
- Crime and punishment, can not apply to a new generation, a non-party to the incident. If so, some of the citizens of some nation, unlike the others, wholesale and without exception, will be approved as if they are born with a sin.
Tarihle yüzleşmek nedir? Ne anlama geliyor? Prof. Türkkaya Ataöv anlatıyor:
- Tarihle yüzleşmek için yalnız Türkiye ya da herhangi bir devlet tek başına ‘günah keçisi’ gibi seçilemez. Geçmişle ve tarihle yüzleşme gerekiyorsa, bu, tüm ülkeler için uygulanabilir olmalıdır. Sayıları iki yüze yaklaşan dünya devletlerinin eksiksiz her biri kendi tarihiyle yüzleşecek olursa, biz de aynını yapalım. Aynı süreçten tümümüz geçelim. O zaman, bizi suçlamaya kalkanlar ilk önce kaçan devletler olacaklardır. Daha da öte, böyle bir yüzleşmeye hiçbiri yanaşmayacaktır.
- Geçmişle yüzleşmek bir tarih sorunudur. Geride kalmış olayları aydınlatacak belgelerin kapsamlı, eksiksiz, doğru, yansız ve dengeli biçimde ortaya konması gerekir. Bu uğraş bilimin görevidir.
- Geçmişle yüzleşmek tek taraflı mahkûmiyet oluşturmak değildir...
- İncelenen konu, anlaşmazlığa taraf olanlardan biri için kin ve öç kaynağı olamaz.
- Suç ve ceza yalnız suçu işleyen kişi için geçerlidir.
- Suç ve ceza, olayla ilgili olmayan yeni kuşakları da içine alamaz. Öyle olursa, kimi ulusların yurttaşlarının, başkalarından farklı olarak, toptan ve istisnasız biçimde, sanki bir günahla doğmakta oldukları onaylanmış olur.
