At the age of 37, Ersin Karabulut has established himself as the leader of Turkish comics, both by the quality of his graphics and by the singularity of his fantastic or humorous stories. Editor-in-chief of Uykusuz, a satirical magazine he co-founded, he uses allegory to illustrate the anxieties of an author and a generation prisoners of an increasingly repressive and oppressive system.

Born in Istanbul in 1981, Ersin Karabulut is one of the great stars of Turkish comics. He began his career at the age of 16, drew for very influential magazines (Pi mi Kelle, Ördek, G rg r, Lombak, Penguen), did the Beaux-Arts Mimar Sinan, then founded in 2007 the prestigious magazine of BD Uykusuz (which means “insomniac”) as well as the publishing house Mürekkep. He currently lives between Istanbul and Los Angeles. Translated into French for the first time in 2018, his Ordinary Tales of a Resigned Society met with great critical success.

Ersin Karabulut is a Turkish digital illustrator and graphic designer who co-founded the prestigious satirical weekly magazine Uykusuz in 2007, although he lived in Los Angeles for a while.

Ersin Karabulut

Ersin Karabulut (born 3 June 1981; Eminönü, Istanbul) is a Turkish comics writer and humorist.

He became popular with his column called "Sandık İçi" in the style of comics, which he started to draw for Penguen magazine and continued in Sleepless, of which he was one of the founders. He published his comics in Turkey and abroad. Striped T-Shirt and Yerati Stories are his important comics.


He was born on June 3, 1981 in Istanbul. Both parents were teachers; He has an older sister who is four years older than him. His interest in comics started in his childhood years.[1] He graduated from Bayrampaşa primary school and Vatan Anatolian High School.[2] His first cartoon was published in Pişmiş Kelle magazine when he was 16 years old.[3] His columns were also published in the same magazine for a while.

He entered Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Graphics for higher education. He started drawing for Lombak magazine and later for Penguin magazine in his sophomore year. He started to be known for his comics titled Underground Stories he drew in Lombak, but gained his real popularity thanks to his column called Sandık İçi, a comic story style he started to draw in Penguin. In this column, he discussed his perspective on life, his own truths and interactions between people with sections from his own life. His first book, Sandık İçi, was published in 2005.[2]

In August 2007, he left Penguen to launch a new magazine, along with a group of illustrators such as Yiğit Özgür and Memo Tembelçizer; On September 5, 2007, he started to publish the magazine called Uykusuz|Sleepless. He continued in Sleepless of Sandık İçi |Inside Chest corner. He also drew different stories such as Dear Diary, Amateur, Underground Stories from time to time instead of Sandık İçi, and continued to publish his drawings into books. He published the books Dear Daily (2009), Sandık İçi 2 (2011) and Amateur (2012), which are the continuation of the Sandık İçi series.

In 2016, Striped T-Shirt, a thriller comic, was released. It was stated that Karabulut brought a new breath to comics with his Striped T-Shirt.[2] After the 25-episode [Striped T-Shirt column, he continued to draw the column called "The Sandık İçi" in Sleepless for a while. Inside the Box 3 was published in 2017.


His drawings, published under the title of Underground Stories, were published in the French journal Fluide Glaical. He has two French albums, Contes Ordinaires D'une Societe Resignee (2018) and Jusqu'ici Tout Allait Bien (2020), created by compiling these works.[4] "Underground Öyküleri" was published in Turkish under the same name in 2021.[4]
