[1] One you’ll likely hear chatter about is Un Certain Regard, the official selection’s largest sidebar of new films. The section’s name is usually translated into English as “a certain look”; this doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the event, which is about looking to new horizons and filmmakers.
In effect, Un Certain Regard functions as a low-key mirror image of the main competition. Screenings are in the Salle Claude Debussy, which doesn’t have the same evening-dress-code restrictions as the larger Grand Théâtre Lumière, where the competition films play. The program has its own jury, with this year’s chaired by the Italian actress Valeria Golino. And while the prizes are not nearly as scrutinized as the Palme d’Or, Un Certain Regard’s top award has in the past gone to filmmakers who went on to have major careers, like Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos.
That said, Un Certain Regard can’t simply be described as a lineup of up-and-coming filmmakers. Occas.ionally, the programmers throw a past Palme contender like Sofia Coppola, or Claire Denis, into the mix, which inevitably looks insulting to those directors, regardless of whether that’s the intention.
Leading German sales firm The Match Factory has acquired international rights to Burning Days, the upcoming feature from Turkish filmmaker Emin Alper that is set to premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
The Match Factory previously handled Alper’s 2019 Berlinale competition title A Tale Of Three Sisters and his 2015 Venice jury prize winner Frenzy. Burning Days marks the first time Alper has been selected for Cannes and will debut in the Un Certain Regard sidebar next month. The filmmaker was invited to Cannes’ Cinefondation L’Atelier co-production forum with the project in 2020, when it was titled Balkaya.
The film follows the story of a young and dedicated prosecutor, who is newly appointed to a small town in Turkey hit by a water crisis and political scandals. After an initial welcome, he experiences an increasing number of tense interactions and is reluctantly dragged into local politics, forming a bond with the owner of the local newspaper that generates heated rumours.
“I wrote this story to convey the feeling of isolation, which haunts the contemporary individual more and more in an atmosphere of rising right-wing populism around the world,” said Alper.
Burning Days was produced by Alper’s regular collaborator Nadir Operli for Turkey’s Ay Yapim and Liman Film. Co-producers are Turkey’s Zola Yapim, France’s Gloria Films, Germany’s Pola Pandora, the Netherlands’ Circe Films, Greece’s Horsefly Productions and Croatia’s 4Film.
Emin Alper was born in 1974 in Ermenek, Karaman. Trained in economics and history at Bogazici University-Istanbul, Alper holds a PhD in Turkish Modern History. His first feature, BEYOND THE HILL (2012), received numerous awards including the Caligari Film Prize at Berlinale Forum and Best Film at Asia Pacific Awards.
His second feature FRENZY (2015) premiered at 72nd Venice Film Festival's in Official Selection's competition and received Jury Special Prize.
His third feature A TALE OF THREE SISTERS (2019) premiered at Berlin Film Festival’s main competition, and received many awards in several festivals. Aside from his filmmaking career, Emin Alper works as the artistic programmer of the newly found Istanbul Cinemateque since February 2021.
