Vedat Türkali was born in Samsun May 13, 1919 as Abdülkadir Demirkan. He graduated from the Department of Turkish Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters at Istanbul University in 1942. He taught Turkish literature at Maltepe Military High School and Kuleli Military High School. In 1951-1958, he was arrested due to political actions. Türkali established Gar Publications with Rıfat Ilgaz. He has written many poems and articles and published them as books. 


Among his works are "Bir Gün Tek Başına" (1974), "Mavi Karanlık" (1983), "Yeşilçam Dedikleri Türkiye,""Bu Gemi Nereye" (1985) and "Tek Kişilik Ölüm" (1990), "Komünist" (2001), "Kayıp Romanlar" (2004), "Yalancı Yanıklar Kahvesi" (2009) and "Bitti Bitti Bitmedi" (2014). He has also written over 40 film scripts such as "Dlandırcılar Şahı" (1960) and directed three films including "Kara Çarsaflı Gelin" (1975), "Karanlıkta Uyananlar" (1964), and "Bedrana" (1974). He has also written four theater plays. Türkalı has received many national and international awards including a Beyaz Mart Literature Honorary Award (2016), an Orhan Kemal Novel Prize (1976), “the First Place" in the Milliyet Publication Novel Competition (1974), a TRT Play Award (1970), and "the Best Scenario" in the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (1965).
